Reach Your Goals Step by Step

When we set a goal, even if we have it very clear in our minds, sometimes it feels like something is holding us back. In many cases, the difficulty isn’t the goal itself, but the high expectations we place on ourselves. We set such a high standards that we end up blocking ourselves in front of the obstacles that appear along the way.

I remember the case of someone who came with a very specific objetive: he wanted to apologize to someone from work. He knew what to do and how to do it, but something inside was holding him back. He had set out to apologize face to face, but he couldn’t take that step. He kept postponing it day after day.

Then, we explored another approach: instead of setting an “all-or-nothing” goal that seemed impossible to reach in a single leap, what if we break it down into smaller, manageable steps? That’s exactly what he did. First, he wrote a message, then he dared to call and had some preliminary conversations. Later, he agreed to meet in person, and finally, he was able to apologize face to face. Following this way, he reached his goal—not all at once, but through gradual steps that allowed him to free himself from a huge burden and keep moving forward. Just like learning to ride a bicycle: first with training wheels, then without, until eventually we
can move forward confidently on our own.
